Director, Health Information Management (HIM)

This position manages the Health Information Management Department to support the coordination and integration of clinical, financial, and demographic patient Information contributing to the hospital’s mission which advocates the provision of high quality healthcare at a reasonable cost and to meet the standards of accrediting and regulatory agencies. The Director supervises and coordinates activities of personnel engaged in analyzing, compiling, coding, transcribing, indexing, and filing permanent medical records of patients. The Director, Health Information Management also manages the Tumor Registry. This position will monitor compliance with governmental and organizational regulations and accreditation standards.
The Director, HIM assists the medical staff in research, prepares periodic and statistical reports, and provides information to authorized persons. This position is responsible for preparing and managing the departmental budget. Supports the validity and accuracy of the clinical and statistical database. The Director participates as a member of a variety of committees relative to medical record review, patient information systems, QI, and process improvement. The Director, Health Information Management is also responsible for providing system and application level support of HIM applications, installation, configuration, development, upgrades, maintenance and support of these systems. Will assess the needs of HIM and HIM computer system users, evaluate and recommend solutions, and participate in planning, installation, implementation, and support of present and new applications and systems. This position reports to the Vice President, Finance/Chief Financial Officer.
Position Qualifications & Skills:
A 4-year college program leading to a Bachelor’s degree in Medical Record Administration (or Health Information Management), or baccalaureate degree with completion of pre-requisites and program of studies in Medical Record Administration (or Health Information Management); and the successful completion of the national registry examination to become a Registered Health Information Administrator; or completion of the AHIMA Independent Study Program in medical record technology or the AHIMA Correspondence Course in medical record technology or completion of a school program in Health Information Technology; and the successful completion of the national accreditation examination to become a Registered Health Information Technologist. This position requires a minimum of five (5) years management experience.
